We intentionally keep our project list short so we can give every client, and every home, the time, attention, and care it deserves.
That means you won’t get passed between departments or layers of managers. You’ll work directly with us throughout the journey, with clear communication and consistent guidance.
We also take building science seriously. Our homes are designed and constructed with long-term performance in mind: healthier indoor air, better insulation, higher efficiency, and increased durability. In a changing climate and a high-risk region, that matters more than ever.
MEET OUR FOUNDER, MATHEW GORYL
Built on Experience. Driven by Craft. Grounded in Purpose.
I come from a family of builders, contractors, framers, and craftsmen. They taught me the value of hard work, and doing things right the first time. During high school summers, I worked on job sites in the suburbs of Chicago with my uncle’s framing company, learning how to frame custom homes from the ground up.
That’s where I developed my foundation, both in building and in mindset.
After high school, I went to work full-time for a custom homebuilder in Hinsdale, Illinois. I became his right-hand man and was quickly exposed to the pace, precision, and pressure of building multi-million dollar homes. That experience deepened my respect for craftsmanship, and showed me how much impact a builder can have on the lives of their clients.
My next chapter took me to Naples, Florida—one of the wealthiest homebuilding markets in the country. There, I managed high-end custom residential projects ranging from $6 million to $20+ million. Working in that environment sharpened my eye for detail and deepened my experience with complex builds, luxury materials, and elevated client expectations. I also gained a deep understanding of how to build for performance, learning firsthand how to work with wind-resistant systems, sustainable assemblies, and materials built to withstand Florida’s coastal climate.
I’ve always had a passion for architectural design—not just how a home looks, but how it lives and functions. I believe a
well-built home should feel timeless, flow naturally, and perform reliably for generations.
I created Burr Oak Building Company to bring all of that together. Our goal is to help redefine what a homebuilder can be in California—especially in a landscape that’s changing due to wildfires, air quality concerns, and rising energy demands. That’s why we’ve established our own Building Science Department: to make sure every home we build is more resilient, efficient, and comfortable.
But at the end of the day, this company is about people. We value long-term relationships just as much as long-lasting construction. Our goal is to make the building process collaborative, honest, and genuinely enjoyable—from first meeting to final walkthrough and beyond. We don’t just want to build your home, we want to stay connected long after it’s complete.
I believe homes should be built with purpose, and so should the companies that build them.
